Zydus Studio
Branding
THE OBJECTIVE
Create a logo and basic branding kit for a newly formed video game studio. It needs to be bold, and stand strong amongst the many other studios that exist.
DESIGN CHOICES
I was presented with a name and a few ideas of what the group was looking for. “Zydus” was a figure of mythological standing, but not in any known pantheons. The client had conjured this concept from a string of inside jokes as they had all shared experiences in working in the IT field. This character represented emotions of rage, water and technology while still feeling Greek inspired. It was a fusion of Zeus and Poseidon traits they found the most interesting. I love mythology and especially the Greeks, this project was a wonderful opportunity to showcase that passion.
INSPIRATIONS
There were sketches presented to me by members of the group to aid my planning and ideation. These had elements that I made note as key to incorporate in the branding. Integrating the trident felt essential. It worked as evidence of the Poseidon influence and a tool of torment. The “Yelling Face” could become a mascot. I didn’t wish for it to be prominent in the main set of branding as to avoid a design that felt overly aggressive or masculine. The look had to be bold, but modern despite its ancient inspirations.
BRAND KIT
The kit included a wordmark, icon/badge, and colors. I chose fonts that showed traits related to ferocity and the fantastical nature of the company’s brand. The trident found its way into the wording of Zydus to be an accent piece that played nicely with the other letters. ‘Z’ being used for the badge felt most appropriate to allow people to call to memory “Zydus”. I decided against it being a trident as to avoid viewers from thinking Poseidon right away or Hell. For colors, I wished to avoid blue since it felt like too easy of a choice and would also point towards Poseidon. This studio’s character was an original deity and needed a bit of separation created to allow for it to be more independently identifiable. I sought inspiration from one of the forms of storytelling Greeks offered, pottery. The colors created from the firing-style and paint immediately felt like the right source. “Dark Amber” and “Ash” were then chosen and refined to become the final colors of the brand. The mascot illustration is still in the works, but was a second phase of the presentation plan.
